Trust to Raise a Statue to Atyeo

Bristol City Supporters Trust is proud to announce the start of a fundraising campaign for a statue to honour the late, great John Atyeo.

When the Trust surveyed City fans about their thoughts for a potential new stadium, nearly 3,000 fans responded. The survey said that 8 out of 10 fans would like to see a statue at the new stadium, and of those who named a preference, 7 out of 10 thought the statue should honour the Club’s greatest playing servant of the modern era, John Atyeo.

“As Bristol City continues to take bold steps to a promising future, it is important that we also keep in touch with the Club’s roots,” says Trust Chair Stuart Rogers.

The Trust has agreed with Club Chairman Steve Lansdown that money raised for the statue will be invested in shares in Bristol City Holdings and that the Club will use the money to commission the statue.

Stuart explains: “The size of the sculpture will depend on the amount of money raised. We’re setting ourselves the target of raising £100,000 by summer 2011. The Trust already has £15,000 earmarked for the statue, and we call on all City fans to contribute.”

The Trust will be carrying out a number of fundraising initiatives over the next two years. In the meantime, you can raise money for the appeal by:

  • Becoming a Trust 'Gold' member, with 50% of your £5 monthly sub going directly to the fund
  • Donating by cheque payable to Bristol City Supporters Trust (Atyeo Statue)
  • Donating via the statue ‘Donate’ button on the Supporters Trust website
  • Donating via the statue ‘Donate’ button on the fans internet forum www.otib.co.uk

You can also contribute towards general Trust funds by:

  • Becoming a 'Red' (£1 per month) or ‘Silver’ (£2.50 per month) member of the Trust
  • Making internet purchases via the links on www.otib.co.uk

Profits from these and other Trust activities will likewise go to the statue fund.

As an extra incentive to join, the Trust is also giving away 10 prizes of £10 play.com vouchers.  To win you have to be a member of the Trust by not later than 31st January 2009. Please see here for details of this offer and how to join.

The Trust will work with the Club and the new stadium team to ensure that the right choice of sculptor and location is made. Should the new stadium plans fall through, the statue will be placed at Ashton Gate.
